DURATION – ONE YEAR
The Diploma in Library Science (DLS) programme is intended to develop professional knowledge and to impart skills to meet the growing man power needs in library management in school, college, university, Public and special Libraries both at Government and non-Government levels.
OBJECTIVES
To know the purpose and function of different types of libraries.
Understand the classification of reading material.
Acquaint students with cataloguing and familiarize them with various sections of libraries.
Know the maintenance of a library.
Learn about various types of library records.
THE COURSE CURRICULUM:
1. Library and Society :- Role of libraries, Types, Legislation, Professional Ethics etc.
2. Library Classification (Theory):- The nature, purpose & definition of library classification, call number, notation, general theory etc.
3. Library Classification (Practical with DDC & CC):- Steps, DDC- Using tables, Schedule & Index, CC- Using common isolates, Division etc.
4. Library organization and management – Principles, HRM, Resource Management, Maintenance etc.
5. Library Catalogue (Theory) – Fundamental concepts, Historical Development, Choice & Rendering of Headings, Subject Cataloging etc.
6. Library Catalogue (Practical with AACR-2 & CCC):- AACR-2 - Works of single & shared Authorship, Works of shared responsibilities, Editorial publications, Multivolume & Pseudonyms etc.
CCC - Works of mixed responsibilities, Editorial publications, Series, Multivolume, works and Pseudonyms etc.
7. Information Sources and Services:- Sources of information, Types of services, Information Literacy Programme etc.
8. Computer application software (Theory & Practical):- Ms-Office – Ms- word, Ms- Excel & Ms- Powerpoint using internet.
